FishCoin for Android — 0.6 (build 20)

What's new since build 19

Install on AndroidAll builds

On open testing, and this is the current build. You can install it from FishCoin's page on Google Play — there is nothing to join and no invitation needed. It replaces build 19.

You can now record a catch with no signal

If you have ever opened FishCoin out on the water, pressed Record and been told "Sign-In Required — could not initialize FishCoin submission session", this is what it was, and it is fixed.

The app was insisting on reaching our servers to sign you in BEFORE it would let the camera start. With no bars, that could not happen, so the recording never began and the catch was lost. That was never the intention: FishCoin is built to record and store your catch on the phone and upload it by itself once you are back in coverage.

Recording no longer waits for the network or for sign-in. The catch is saved on your phone and uploaded later, on its own, when you have signal again.

Who this actually affected

Probably not everyone, and it is worth being straight about it. Once the app had signed you in successfully even once, it remembered, and Record worked offline from then on. It hit hardest on a phone that had never managed it — a new install, a new phone, or an app whose data had been cleared — which means the people most likely to have met it are those whose FIRST trip with FishCoin was somewhere without coverage.

You still need a GPS fix to record. That is deliberate and unchanged: a catch is recorded with the spot it was made, and GPS itself does not need a phone signal.

How it was checked

On a real phone in airplane mode, with the app's data cleared so it had never signed in. Before the fix, Record refused with the sign-in message. After it, Record proceeds. The same test was run against the old build to be sure it genuinely catches the problem rather than merely passing.

What was not checked

One unrelated test is failing on the build machine — saving a profile PHOTO taken with the selfie button does not report success within 30 seconds. It fails the same way on the previous build, so it is not something this release introduced, and its cause is not yet understood. Choosing an existing photo and saving your name are unaffected. If your profile picture does not seem to save, that is the known one.

What is unchanged

Measuring, your gallery, challenges, tournaments and sign-in all behave as they did in build 19.

What would help most

Unchanged, and still first: tape-measure a fish and enter the number — with the tail pinched to a point, as the prompt asks.

And if you fish somewhere with no coverage: record a catch there, then come back into signal and check it appears in your gallery as uploaded. That is the path this build repairs and the one we would most like confirmed in the wild.
